East Village.
While
it is no Peugeot Landaulet picking you up in Paris, Veniero's is still an escape to another era.
Since 1894, the bakery has kept up with its international fame with cases full of cheesecake, tiramisu, strawberry shortcake, sfogliatelle, and a never ending stream of traditional Italian pastries.
Venture past the display case and waiters with wonderfully heavy accents whisk you away to a golden niche crowned with a kaleidoscope glass ceiling. Ignore the tourists
and Asian-cafe-squatters (myself included) who have managed to time travel with you and sit down for your just desserts.
{Torta Di Mandorle}
Amidst the frenzy of vanilla butter cream and red velvet cakes stands Veniero's Torta Di Mandorle, one of the best NYC cakes I have had the pleasure of trying. Each forkful of this almond torte takes you through layers of yellow cake, apricot jam filling, and nutty almond paste. Doused in a spot of rum and protected by a baked almond shell, the cake stays moist with a candy crunch. The unmistakable almond flavor, reminiscent of marzipan, balances the sweet and tart layers inside.
It is just rich enough to be an excuse to share with a loved one~
{Miniature pastry assortment: strawberry tart, cream puff, cannoli}
For those who just can't choose one. You know who you are.
